Circumcision

"I am interested in your thoughts on male circumcision. We are expecting our first son and I hear the procedure is no longer routine."

-Miguel, Santa Maria

You are exactly right … circumcision is no longer routine in the United States …although about sixty percent of male babies undergo the procedure. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics … there are benefits and risks to circumcision. Benefits include men being less likely to develop penile cancer and urinary tract infections … and recent research provides some definitive evidence that circumcision prevents the transmission of HIV. The risks are obvious and can include pain … scarring and infection at the wound site. In addition … there can be social stigma associated with circumcision in certain cultures. Ultimately … it is up to the parents to decide whether to have their son circumcised as an infant.

The decision is up to the parents?  Whose penis is it again?

The rate of newborn circumcision in California is down to 21% as of 2005.

Please don't mention HIV and infant circumcision together.  Infants aren't at risk of sexually transmitted infection, and besides, most of the US men who have died of AIDS were circumcised at birth.  Circumcision does not prevent AIDS.  In the recent poorly designed Africa research, the African men they circumcised DID contract HIV at a rate six times higher than the rate of new infection in African-American men.

No medical association on earth recommends routine circumcision.

Thank you for your comments. Perhaps I should have said "It is up to the parents to decide to let their son decide to be circumcised".

I respect your objects to circumcision and your points are valid. However, there is definitive evidence that heterosexual men are significantly (about 50%) less likely to contract and transmit HIV if circumcised.

The World Health Organization has called circumcision one of the most effective tools at stopping he spread of HIV in thrid world countries.

This study comes from Africa, which unlike the U.S., sees MILLIONS of new cases of HIV each year.
