Black History Month Allan Hancock College

I am a student at Allan Hancock College, a great school and some amazing people who work and attend there. I happened to be African American and I know we are only a small percentage of the population here, but come on. In the community I see hard working people, intelligent, strong and movitvated. So I was very happy, when I heard about the Black History Month Events there. This month, every week there has been some type of event from Cultural Dancing to Poety Reading. There was a rap group(KNS) that was featured on BEAT.COM, they were a christian type rap artists (clean lycrics).

What I am saying is this, I want you and the public to know that the committee that helped put this on was a culturally diverse group of students (ASBG), Staff and community people. The reason is because Black Month is more than just a history of Black or African American people. It is the history of all of us collectively it is about all of us working together to build a better community, a better California and most of all a Better world.

So let us celebrate the rich history of all our cultures together!

"I am Black and Proud" (like James Brown once said) but more importantly

"I am a American and even prouder"

    Shout out to the troops!

Re: Black History Month Allan Hancock College

Huh? As a new member of the state and city of Lompoc, I am in a state of utter confusion, I was also excited to find that ALLAN HANCOCK had a african -american /Black History month at all, as you commented that WE are a small segment of the population and student body there, however you missed the point competely. From what I have noticed on the Central coast, is that African -Americans are very seldom mentioned ( unless involved in a crime) and have a hard time finding employment and have no cultral activities ,festivals or meeting places at all! Its almost like Black folk here are invisiable to the rest of the population, where are our festivals, where are our cultral get -togethers , We are so fast to celebrate everyone elses cultrure and heritage that we seem to forget all about our own, cmon sista at least allow us to have the 30 days to ourselves because ,alot of people growing up out here are cultrally lost and have no sense of who they are and where they come from or even where they may be going. As Malcom X stated before his death ,if you don't know your history ,you are doomed to repeat it! I'm from the east coast  and since I moved out here ( almost a year ) there is no diversity that includes african - Americans, Where are we represented outside of a correctional institution?
